Pregnostx Home Pregnancy Tests for Goats
I used Pregnostx tests for goats, and this is how it went.
Because goat do not show signs of pregnancy for a few months, many people choose to do a blood test for pregnancy on their goats. Historically, these were done at least 30 days after breeding, and sent to a lab. Wait for results after drawing blood could be anywhere from 3 to 10 days.
Pregnostx allows one to draw blood 28 days after breeding, and provides results within 30 minutes.
We drew blood on Florence 29 days after she was bred. The kits come with everything you need - needle, transfer guard, purple top edta tubes, test plates, pipettes, and chaser solution.
We drew her blood from her external jugular vein into the tube. Once inside, we popped the top off, and used the included pipette to collect the blood from the tube. Dripped the blood onto the test plate, followed by 3 drops of the chaser solution, as indicated on their instructions, and set a timer for 30 minutes.
I walked by at 10 minutes, and it was already positive!
Goat pregnancy tests detect PAG's - Pregnancy Associated Glycoproteins which are produced by the developing placenta. These proteins are also present in the milk of a pregnant goat, though in smaller amounts.
Because of this, I decided to test a sample of her milk. I milked straight into the purple top tube, and followed the same steps with the milk as I did the blood.
The Pregnostx Goat Pregnancy test works using goat milk! I was very pleasantly surprised, as it is much easier to obtain a milk specimen from a goat than a blood specimen. Going forward, I will test milk first. If it is negative, I will then do a blood test.
In summary, Pregnostx home pregnancy tests for goats are easy to use, accurate, and fast.
Pregnostx home pregnancy tests for goats can be used to test goat milk for pregnancy, which will make my life easier.
